Our Staff

Well actually we like to refer to them as our family because that’s what “Omyim” is all about. Obviously the head of our family is me, Suchart Phumkhed or “Aek” The restaurant was my dream and now it has come true.

The manager is my sister Tiphagorn or “Nong” She has the responsibility of the day to day functions of the place which includes our coffee and internet shop next door. A big job for a small girl (haha)

Next we have Ouan or, as we like to call her, Mama Yai (big mamma) she has worked for us since we first began and is the head of our kitchen. She was a bronze medallist in a Thai cookery contest for all of Thailand and we are very proud to have her cook for you.

Our second chef is Coon or, our pet name for him is Skinny Chef which, if you see him standing next to Ouan you will know why we call him that. He has been with us for nine months and has been trained especially to prepare western food as well as being an expert for Thai dishes.

And our third chef is Khai but again we have our own name to fit her size and this is Mama Noi (little mamma) again obvious when you see them all together.  Mama Noi is very experienced in Thai and western cooking and she is a great asset to our business.

Our head waitress is Palm. She has had training in some of Thailand’s top hotels and a five star restaurant but, she just loves to be a part of our family and it shows in the way she serves every customer with courtesy and a “little smile” of course.

Last but by no means least we have Doon who is the husband of our manager. You will find him looking after our customers in the coffee and internet shop. He is also important to the restaurant as he is the fresh food buyer and goes to the market very early every morning to get the freshest possible produce for our dishes.

So you see “Omyim” really is a family business and, we are here to serve you in the best way that we can.

ABOUT ME

I am Suchart Phumkhed (Aek)  26 years old and come from Roiet in Issaan. In 1999 grade year 11 at college, I was the winner of the Kings Scholarship Prize which means I was the top student from all of the North Eastern Thailand colleges. I studied fine arts and minor eco tourism and attained a B.A.

I love art and design, painting and ceramics are my main works and I have had art shows in the Silom area of Bangkok for the last few years, sponsored by Dicks Café I have also won numerous competitions for poster design for major leading companies worldwide.

My job when I graduated was as a web designer but this was cut short when I went into the army. During my time in the Kings service I planned for my future which was to have my own restaurant. Since leaving I have worked in various jobs and sold as many paintings as I could to save the money to start my first restaurant, this I have now done and so I am proud to present to you OM YIM. Why this name? well it means “little smile” and that is what I do every time I go to work there.

Om Yim was opened during September 2004 and has grown up since then. My idea was to have a restaurant where ordinary Thai people could go and enjoy good food in pleasant surroundings but at an easily affordable price.  I have been told many times that the prices are too low but I refuse to try and cash in on the tourist trade as this would be against my concept and my principles so they remain as low as I can make them but, with food and service uncompromised. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal so no need to dress up.
Each year I want to change and enhance the restaurant so that it does not get boring. This year I have made a new garden space with cosy areas for intimate dining, next year? Well you will have to wait and see, it’s a big surprise.

Also this year I started OM YIM COFEE NET, no not just another coffee and internet shop, this one has style and comfort as well as good service. My idea was to have a space where people could go to relax and have a coffee in a place that felt like their own lounge. Then they could use the internet or even order food from my restaurant to be brought to them, again all at a competitive price. Well so far, so good, now on to plan my next venture. What will that be? Again you will have to wait and see, yet another surprise or maybe even a shock!!
